New kind of Folk

Mumford & Sons…the most intense folk band of 2009/2010 or the most intense folk band ever, backed mainly by keyboard, banjo, acoustic guitar/kick drum, and stand up bass-This sounds like a standard folk group, but when you add Marcus Mumford’s voice it’s a different story. At times his voice sounds soft and soothing, but you can guarantee at some point in the tune you will forget you are listening to a folk/acoustic band. The combination of Mumford’s voice and the backing of the groups vocals brings a different kind of intensity to folk music that is rarely achieved. Here is one of my favorites off their debut album Sigh No More White Blank Page live:

New Distinct Sounds

Welcome to my blog I am very excited to be sharing my thoughts and ideas with everyone. This entry is quite old, but I figured I would post my response to these albums and musicians anyways. I recently purchased a couple of CD’s (which was worth every penny) include Natalie Merchant’s most recent album Leave Your Sleep and the tranquil Teen Dream album by the duo Beach House.

I bought Merchant’s album instantly after I heard the song Equestrienne. The orchestration done by Stephen Barber and Natalie Merchant is brilliant and very effective. Equestrienne is backed by the Meridian Arts Ensemble, a string quartet, pump organ, and bass. The whole album is filled with amazing musicians such Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Klezmatics, Medeski Matin & Wood (mmw.net), and the list goes on. The lyrics on the album are taken from poems written about or for children by mostly American and British poets. As for Beach House Third album Teen Dream, what can I say, I believe they are one of the most original sounding rock bands of the 21st century thus far. The duo creates a calm floating vibe throughout the album with a wide range of vocals and various tones of deep underground reverberation. The CD comes not only with music, but with a whole DVD of interesting music videos for the album, directed by various independent film makers. I can’t wait to see what they come out with next. Definitely take the time to check this group out, you won’t be disappointed.
